(CGTN) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday 29 May met with Secretary of Foreign Affairs Lorin S. Robert of Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) in Xiamen, with the two sides pledging to advance China-FSM comprehensive strategic partnership.
Robert, is in China to attend the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, noted that with the concerted efforts of the FSM and other participating countries, the meeting produced a joint statement that injects fresh momentum into relations between China and Pacific Island nations.
Wang highlighted the steady progress in China-FSM relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties, noting that it has brought tangible benefits to the people of the FSM.
He said the Chinese side commended the FSM Congress for passing a resolution reaffirming its commitment to the one-China principle and expressed confidence that the FSM will continue to firmly support China’s just position on the Taiwan question.
Noting that the handover of the China-assisted FSM National Convention Center marks a milestone in bilateral ties, Wang said China stands ready to work with the FSM to advance Belt and Road cooperation.
Looking ahead, Wang proposed expanding cooperation in key areas, such as infrastructure, climate change response, and marine scientific research. He also urged efforts to deepen exchanges in education, youth, and local governance to further advance the China-FSM comprehensive strategic partnership.
Robert extended his congratulations on the conclusion of the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and praised the fruitful and respectful cooperation between the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic ties.
He acknowledged China’s vital support for his country’s development, describing the National Convention Center as a testament to the growing bilateral relationship.
Robert reiterated the FSM government’s firm adherence to the one-China principle, affirming that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.
He described China not only as a close development partner but also as a global leader championing sustainable development and fairness for the Global South.
The FSM is committed to further strengthening its comprehensive strategic partnership with China, Robert said.
