King George VI (KGVI) Hockey Club (HC) have been crowned champions of the HookIn4Life (HI4L) Community Hockey Competition after a commanding 3-1 victory over White Kovara HC in the Men’s Division Grand Final, held on Friday, June 27 at the National Hockey Center.
Riding the momentum from their dominant 5-2 semi-final win over Dolphin HC earlier in the day, KGVI continued their impressive form into the final, cheered on by a large contingent of King George VI School students.
Speaking to Star Sports after the match, player-coach Patterson White praised his team’s dedication, discipline, and sacrifices as key to their success.
“We began preparations two months ago. Balancing school commitments with regular training sessions has been tough, but these boys consistently showed up and gave their best. Their passion and dedication truly paid off,” White said.
He also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the KGVI community.
“We’re incredibly thankful to the students and staff who came out to support us. Their presence really lifted our spirits throughout the final,” he added.
White extended his acknowledgement to the school administration for providing access to training facilities and to the competition organizers for creating a platform that empowers youth.
“This competition not only showcases talent from communities in and around Honiara, but also plays a crucial role in engaging young people in positive activities and steering them away from antisocial behaviors,” he noted.
In the final standings, KGVI HC claimed first place, followed by White Kovara HC in second, and Renegades HC taking third.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Division, Parrots Women’s HC reigned supreme, completing an unbeaten campaign to finish top of the table with 12 points.
All six trophies across both divisions were proudly sponsored by Our Telekom, in support of grassroots hockey development in the country.
