A MISSION to rebuild the state-owned King George VI School chapel in Honiara is now underway.
Former students of King George VI School led by Mr. Gina Tekulu the first local principal with support from the current principal as well as other ex-students like Joe Porowai, Chris Samuel Resana and others from 1975 to 1980 have embarked on this project.
Membership is open to the remaining former students of the school from 1960s to current. A good number of them could be out in the provinces but can still render support through various means.
The first building was pulled down in 1975 and for the last fifty years the school has been without a chapel.
And as of last year, a group of former students with their leaders have been holding regular meetings in an effort to build a new chapel for the school.
And as part of their efforts various fundraising events have been planned for the remainder of this year and 2026.
And one of those events is the Raffle Ticket Draw to take place on 15th December 2026, some sixteen months away.
Having the draw date to fall on that date will allow maxim benefits in terms of commercial publicity for the prize sponsors.
Already a number of firms and individuals have indicated support and their details will be made known soon.
In the meantime, the committee is still open to those interested in becoming sponsors and can indicate their interest on either email [email protected] or by calling cell phone number 7525858.
Tickets will go on sale towards the end of August following an official launching. They will be available through-out Solomon Islands as well as in some regional countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, PNG, Samoa, and Vanuatu.
These countries hold significant number of Solomon Islanders. Also some former students of King George VI School are from these countries and will want to help their former school.
Those in the committee consider it a privilege to serve in that body as, for most of them this could be their last gift to the school, the very institution that had over the last seventy-three years given so much to the country without expecting a reward.
