The Solo Enviro Beautification (SEB) successfully held its annual general meeting (AGM) on Monday 11th August with a number of issues being discussed.
Keithie Saunders Chairperson Solo Enviro Beautification said, the discussion focused on a number of community projects that have been achieved or others that are underway and coming up.
“SEB is a non for-profit NGO whose mission statement is to “Continually enhance and beautify the city and surrounds of Honiara City,” she explained.
During the AGM a number of projects that have been achieved between 2024 and 2025 were highlighted and discussed.
The first involved the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Honiara City Council (HCC) for future environmental development of Honiara city.
The completion of the gardens at the new domestic Port Authority and maintenance of all ports planting was also an achievement by SEB, the AGM heard.
Mrs Saunders said, upgrading of the airport gardens including the Memorial gardens at Henderson International airport is one of the many projects SEB was involved plus the upgrade of the US Monument Gardens.
Planting palms in the middle road under MID grant is also being undertaken by SEB, Mrs Saunders added.
SEB was also tasked to produce thousands of Vetiver plants for SIWA, that acts as a filter and protection for water sources.
At the moment discussion and signing of an agreement with CAUSE for the upgrade of landscape work from Lunga bridge to Telekom Roundabout in East Honiara is underway.
At the Honiara International Airport, SEB will also be involved in filling the arrival and departure lounges with indoor plants under a request from the Solomon Islands Airport Corporation Limited (SIACL).
The meeting was updated that a number of gardens have been established at the new USP and KG campus which have completed. SEB has been contracted to do maintenance work.
The AGM also noted how the current roadworks have cut down all the trees SEB planted at Rove in 2003. And SEB is not giving up by planning to source support for mass replanting on the road project is complete.
The current the condition of the Rove childrens park was also discussed given its current state.
There are plans to talk to HCC regarding contractors returning the site to pre-road development.
The AGM also discussed the development and maintenance of all roundabouts. With the completion of the road project three new roundabouts are expected to be supported.
At the moment under the SEB project a total of 60 gardeners have been employed with four (4) managers, two office staff and 8 nursery staff.
SEB said it continues to work towards its goal of enhancing the environmental footprint of Honiara, and asks the public to respect the trees, palms and gardens that SEB develops and maintains.
