A group of women miraculously survived a terrifying boat collision in the Shortlands, Western Province more than a week ago.
Reports reaching the Solomon Star said, the incident occurred when two outboard motor canoes (OBMs) collided head-on while travelling between two villages in the Shortlands.
It was reported that the boat (15 hp fibreglass boat) was carrying a group of Catholic women after celebrating the Day of Assumption Feast day on Friday August 15at Koliai village that hosted the annual Church program.
On their way back to their village to Aleang late that evening as the sun was already set, a 60 horse powered (HP) ray boat approached and crashed into them.
The driver of the 60hp OBM failed to stop and escaped.
Sources from the area said, the women sustained minor injuries and shock but were later treated at the Nila Clinic before being discharged.
Reports also said that the driver of the 15hp boat was thrown in the water and was also traumatized during the accident.
Community leaders in the Shortlands have since raised concerns about the increasing number of OBM accidents in the province.
They stressed the urgent need for stricter safety measures, especially night-time travel without proper lights and safety gear.
Despite the frightening ordeal, the community expressed gratitude that no lives were lost.
