THE Western Provincial Government (WPG) has revealed that SBD$1 million earmarked under the national government’s development budget for roads in the province may be directed to Gizo.
In a recent statement, WPG said it has instructed the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) engineer to confirm which roads the funds are designated for.
“At this stage, we are not certain which roads the funds are meant for, but our intention is to allocate the entire amount towards Gizo roads,” WPG stated.
The government added it will provide clarity once advice is received from MID.
WPG also acknowledged the growing concerns of residents over deteriorating road conditions in Gizo.
“As a provincial government, we do understand the frustrations of citizens and acknowledge their right to raise concerns,” the statement added.
WPG stressed that responsibility for all national infrastructure — including roads, bridges, wharves, and airports — lies with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), not provincial governments.
“The provincial government does not receive budget allocations for maintaining national infrastructure.
“The fixed service grants we receive from the national government are not intended for road or infrastructure works,” the statement clarified.
Over the decades, Gizo town has continued to suffer from poor road conditions, with residents repeatedly voicing frustrations over lack of maintenance and upgrades.
Concern residents and vehicle owners almost spend more money for spare parts and maintenance just because of the poor road conditions in the heart of the capital town.
