Solomon Islands has joined the rest of the world in celebrating the annual International Day of Democracy on Monday.
This year’s celebration, held at the FOPA Village in East Honiara, carried the theme “Youth Voices, United Choices: Youth in Democratic Action.”
Delivering the keynote address as Guest of Honour, the Acting Prime Minister, Honourable Fredrick Kologeto, MP, highlighted the vital role of young people in shaping a positive future for the nation.
“You, our youth, are a vibrant and energetic part of our population. Your voices carry innovation, diversity, and hope,” the Acting Prime Minister stated.
He emphasized that young people have the power to inspire and create choices rooted in shared values such as equality, justice, and transparency.
“These are not just aspirations; they are the very principles on which democracy stands strong,” he added.
DPM Kologeto reminded that democratic action is not limited to casting a vote, but also includes community dialogue, civic education, and advocacy — not violence.
By empowering young people to speak, listen, and lead together, he stressed, Solomon Islands can ensure that democracy remains alive and responsive to the needs of all citizens.
“Your participation today is an investment in the peace, stability, and progress of tomorrow,” he affirmed.
The Acting Prime Minister also reiterated that Solomon Islands’ democracy is enshrined in the national constitution, which guarantees the fundamental rights and freedoms of all individuals — including the right to life, liberty, security of the person, and protection of the law; freedom of conscience, expression, assembly, and association; and protection of privacy and property.
He noted, however, that these rights and freedoms come with limitations designed to ensure that their enjoyment does not prejudice the rights and freedoms of others, nor undermine the public interest.
