A high-level team from the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Survey arrived in Auki on Monday for a three-day consultation meeting commencing Tuesday.
The delegation is led by Permanent Secretary Stanley Waleanisia and Commissioner of Lands, Alan McNeil.
The team was officially welcomed by Malaita Province Premier Elijah Asilaua, members of the provincial executive, and senior provincial officials.
Premier Asilaua expressed his government’s appreciation to the ministry for pursuing important project consultations with the provincial government, stakeholders, and local communities.
“This is a momentous time for us, and I would like to thank the Permanent Secretary and your delegation for recognizing the importance of this project to Malaita Province,” Premier Asilaua said.
He expressed excitement to see the detailed program of the team’s trip to Auki.
“For our people, this is a dream come true.”
As part of the consultation, the delegation will also conduct a field visit to Lilisiana community, one of the most affected coastal areas located at the entrance of Auki Harbour.
Premier Asilaua said the field and scoping trip will help the community better understand the relocation framework and gain insights into the relocation process.
Permanent Secretary Waleanisia, in response, acknowledged the warm welcome from the Malaita Provincial Government and highlighted the importance of the consultations.
He said, the three-day program will include key discussions and presentations aimed at developing a stronger framework to address land management and development challenges in Malaita.
“This consultation is very important as it provides an opportunity for all stakeholders to share ideas that will help shape better land management and development strategies for the province,” Mr. Waleanisia said.
