Dear Editor – I write to advocate for the involvement of women in leadership and national security.
Pacific feminist Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls emphasized at the recent Pacific Islands Leaders Forum the need for women’s involvement in national security discussions, especially on human security, peace, and development.
While I acknowledge that in the Solomon Islands, males remain the dominant decision-makers in leadership and national security, the inclusion of women is vital.
Women continuously face threats of violence, discrimination, and online abuse, but little is done to address these challenges. Their voices are oftentimes heard but barely adapted into action.
Advocating women’s rights and engaging them in security and peace discussions is crucial for a just and equal society.
Reflecting our commitment to leadership and security development demonstrates gender equality and respect for human rights.
I urge our leaders to actively recognize and support the role of women in building a more peaceful and secure Solomon Islands.
Sincerely,
Sundy Heimane
