PRIMARY and secondary school teachers in Western Province have completed practical training sessions under the Physical Education (PE) Capacity Building Program.
The training, which followed several days of theory classes, was coordinated by the National Sports Council (NSC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD).
It was facilitated by experts from the Shandong Foreign Trade Vocational College in China, led by Associate Professor Xu and Director Li.
The program focused on strengthening teachers’ ability to deliver quality PE and sports programs in schools.
NSC official Atueta Balekana told the Star Sports that the initiative is designed not only to build teaching skills but also to encourage healthier lifestyles among students.
“The training emphasized discipline, teamwork, and the role of sports in developing both physical and mental wellbeing,” he explained.
During the practical sessions, teachers were introduced to modern approaches in sports education, combining classroom strategies with on-field techniques to boost student participation and performance.
Teachers who took part welcomed the training, saying it gave them valuable skills and practical tools to integrate sports into their schools’ learning programs.
The program is part of a broader partnership between Solomon Islands and the Shandong Foreign Trade Vocational College, with support from the NSC, to revive PE in schools and promote sports development nationwide.
For many in the education sector, the training is seen as an effort to revive physical education in schools, which has been described as “dying out” in recent years.
The workshop sessions will concluded by on Monday.
