The Solomon Islands national futsal team, Kurukuru, have reasserted their dominance in Oceania after ending a six-year drought to claim their seventh OFC Futsal Men’s Nations Cup title on Wednesday in Suva.
Gone are the days of legendary names like Elliott Ragomo, Jack Whitney, James Egeta, and others who once brought pride and joy to fans at home and abroad.
Today, a new generation has stepped up to carry the nation’s hopes, and they have done so in style.
Amongst the standout performers in Fiji was 27-year-old goalkeeper Cliff Sasau, who was outstanding between the posts throughout the competition.
His consistency and commanding presence earned him the Golden Glove award of the tournament.
Speaking to Star Sports, Sasau credited the team’s success to their unity and hard work.
“First of all, I would like to give all glory and thanks back to the Almighty in heaven. Our team played with determination and teamwork in winning the title, and it was such a proud moment for all of us,” he said.
“Every player gave their best, and the victory showed how much effort and unity we put into training and supporting each other on and off the court.”
Sasau first debuted for Kurukuru at the 2023 Nations Cup, where the team finished third. Just two years later, he has firmly established himself as the nation’s number one shot-stopper.
“Winning the Golden Glove is an amazing feeling for me personally. It’s a rewarding experience after years of focusing and dedicating myself to goalkeeping.
“I’m so grateful, not just for myself, but for my teammates and coaches who pushed me to be better,” he shared.
With the Nations Cup now secured, Sasau revealed that the team’s focus has already shifted to the FIFA Futsal World Cup qualifiers next year.
“The focus now is to improve my game and knowledge to become better as we prepare for the World Cup qualifiers. That’s our main priority—to bring the country back to the world stage,” he said.
The Golden Glove winner also expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who supported the team from afar.
“I want to take this moment to thank all our supporters and families back home. Your prayers, encouragement, and unwavering belief in us have been our greatest strength. Every cheer, every message, and every sacrifice you’ve made carried us forward.
“This victory is not only ours, but it also belongs to all of you. We are proud to represent you, and we carry your love with us every time we step on the court.”
The champions are expected to arrive back in Honiara on Wednesday, October 1st, where they will be welcomed home as heroes.
