A GROUP of dedicated tilapia farmers from Southern region of Malaita have successfully harvested their first stock after a year of hard work and commitment.
This milestone achievement and harvest was conducted last week.
The project, which began in September 2024, was spearheaded by local farmer Paul Asitewa and his group.
Malaita province fishery officer Mathew Isihanua said after 12 months of care and management, the team harvested around 200 tilapia fish in early September, drawing praise from community members and agricultural stakeholders.
“This is a great achievement and a role model for tilapia farmers within the Southern region of Malaita,”
“It shows the passion and determination our farmers have for aquaculture,” Mr Isihanua said
As part of the project the group constructed three fish ponds; all supplied with continuous piped fresh water to ensure the best environment for breeding and growth.
Their success has been described as an inspiration for other farmers in the region who are seeking to diversify their livelihoods through aquaculture.
Tilapia farming is gaining recognition across Malaita as an alternative source of income and nutrition for rural communities.
Mr Isihanua encouraged more groups to follow in the footsteps of Asitewa and his team, stressing that the project’s success is proof that fish farming can thrive in local conditions if farmers commit themselves to the work.
The Southern Malaita community has applauded the effort, with many seeing it as the beginning of a sustainable pathway to food security and economic empowerment.
