Initial phase for the full rehabilitation of Mendana Avenue Road in Central Honiara has commenced on Monday, spanning from Heritage Park Roundabout to the Honiara City Council Roundabout.
Contractor China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for this Land and Maritime Construction Project (LMCP) will execute in sections, starting from the Heritage Park Roundabout towards the Solomon Motors branch at Point Cruz, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic flow and business activities.
Key activities during this initial phase include drainage trench excavation, pipe laying, and drainage pit construction along the outer lanes on both seaside and landside roads.
Inner eastbound and westbound lanes will remain open to traffic, with outer lanes temporarily blocked. Business houses and residents will still have access to nearby offices and shops, and pedestrians can continue to use sidewalks and designated crossing points safely.
In the meantime, road works on Tandai Highway (Townground to White River) are progressing, focusing on the section from Rove Bulk Shop to Rifle Range/Bishop Dale Road.
This includes roadway excavation, sub-grade preparation, laying of sub-base and base course materials, curbstone and footpath installation, prime coat application, and sealing works.
“Once the Tandai Highway project is completed, our full attention will shift to the Mendana Avenue Road rehabilitation, covering the remaining 1.7 kilometres up to the Honiara City Council Roundabout,” said Ishmael Alulu, Director of the Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division.
The Central Project Implementation Unit (CPIU) of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) sincerely appreciates the cooperation and patience of all road users during the road upgrade under this collaboration project of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Solomon Islands Government.
