Dear Editor – As a young student who is really passionate about the well being of other people, I would like to convey my personal concern and the approach towards the alarming rate of domestic violence within our country which is on the rise.
Domestic violence has been an ongoing human right issue that has been occurring in our country Solomon Islands for years and reached an escalating high rate during the ethnic tensions in 1998-2003 and even today.
This issue is seen to be prompted from the perception of an acceptable way of disciplining women and a way of ensuring that women are abiding by the gender expected rules set for them.
This has significantly led to women not coming forward to report these acts of violence.
In saying this, it is encouraging to see that action has been made to assist with this issue.
Although it’s still highly prevalent, I believe that through education, cultural communication approach and a growing mindset, our people can work together to stop this form of abuse in our country.
Yours Sincerely,
Natasha Sipele
