Tozen Leokana, Minister of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD), has appealed to all teachers nation-wide to never underestimate the power of their influence.
The delivered the powerful message on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day (WTD) Friday in Honiara.
Leokana described WTD as a day dedicated to honoring the teaching profession—one that shapes every other profession and plays a foundational role in society.
“It is a day of gratitude, reflection, and a reminder of the sacrifice, commitment, and inspiration of our teachers who light the path for the present and future generations,” he said.
While the global theme for this year’s WTD is “Recasting the Future as a Collaborative Profession,” the local organizing committee selected a theme that resonates deeply with the country’s educational priorities: “Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers’ Recognition.”
“These two themes—Collaboration and Recognition—are essential pillars upon which we build the future of education in our nation,” Leokana emphasized.

He reminded educators of their profound impact, noting that every professional—doctors, engineers, judges, scientists, entrepreneurs, and leaders—first sat in a classroom, inspired by a teacher’s words, discipline, and example.
“Teachers, never underestimate the power of your influence,” Leokana urged. “You may not see the results of your labor immediately, but years later, a student may return and say, ‘Teacher, because of you, I believed in myself. Because of you, I became who I am today.’”
“That is the legacy of teaching,” he continued. “It is not measured in money, but in the lives changed. Not in titles or status, but in the destinies you help shape.”
Friday’s celebration began with a thanksgiving service at the SSEC Central Church before a parade through the Honiara city all the way to the Museum grounds.
The program featured speeches and entertainment.
The celebration ended last night at Yacht club with a wind down dinner.
Hundreds of teachers from Honiara and Guadalcanal schools joined in the celebration.
