A new toilet facility was officially handed over to Honiara Senior High School on Wednesday, marking another important achievement in improving sanitation and hygiene in schools across Honiara.
The project was funded by the Government of New Zealand through UNICEF, in partnership with the Solomon Islands Government through the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHRD).
The official ceremony marked an important milestone for the school and the wider Honiara community, as the new facility aims to improve hygiene, sanitation, and access to clean water for students and staff.
Speaking during the event, Honiara City Council Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Clement Terewauri, expressed his sincere gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the project.
He said the completion of the WASH facility shows the strong partnership between the national government, donor partners, and the city council.
“This project represents more than just a building; it is an investment in the health, dignity, and future of our students,” said Cr. Terewauri.
“On behalf of the Honiara City Council, I would like to thank the New Zealand Government, UNICEF, and the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development for their tireless support and partnership in making this important project possible.”

His Excellency Jonathan Curr, New Zealand High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, also expressed his appreciation for the collaboration that made the project successful.
He reaffirmed New Zealand’s continued commitment to supporting education and improving school environments across the Solomon Islands.
“We are proud to stand alongside our partners in the Solomon Islands Government and UNICEF to deliver projects that directly benefit young people,” His Excellency Curr said. “Good sanitation and hygiene are essential for a safe and healthy learning environment.”
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Dr. Franco Rodie, also conveyed his gratitude on behalf of the National Government.
He acknowledged the support of all partners and reminded the school community of their responsibility to care for the new facility.
“This is a valuable investment in our children’s future,” said Dr. Rodie. “I encourage the school to take good care of this facility so that it can serve many generations of students in years to come.”
The Principal of Honiara Senior High School, together with the school board and staff, also expressed their appreciation to MEHRD, UNICEF, and the Government of New Zealand for prioritizing the project.
Students who attended the event shared their excitement and gratitude, saying the new WASH facility will make a big difference in their daily school life.
