Specific maintenance work on the sealed roads in West Honiara, Lot 1, commenced late last month.
This project covers routes: Guppy Street, Island Jetty Road, Lengakiki Road, Mbuburu Road, and the road leading to the Ministry of Mines and Forestry.
The contract for this lot experienced delays due to a revised scope of priorities since 2023 and in subsequent years.
However, it has recently received approval from the Central Tender Board.
Funding for this maintenance is provided through the National Transport Fund, contributed by the Solomon Islands Government.
The contractor for this lot is utilizing the chip seal method to seal key sections, in accordance with the quantities specified in their contract.
Work on Lot 2, which covers sealed roads in West Honiara—including Mud Alley, Tsilm Street, Matavale Crescent, Tavio Ridge, Rifle Range, and the White River network—is also expected to commence once the formalities are finalized.

Specific maintenance works on the four unsealed road lots across West Honiara are currently ongoing, and their contracts will lapse at the end of this month.
The Central Project Implementation Unit (CPIU) of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) continues to provide overall supervision and quality assurance for these local contracts.
In the meantime, the Solomon Islands Government and Asian Development Bank’s Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP) are progressing with road rehabilitation on Tandai Highway (Townground to White River), focusing on the section from Rove Bulk Shop to Rifle Range/Bishop Dale Road.
This includes roadway excavation, subgrade preparation, laying of sub-base and base course materials, curbstone and footpath installation, prime coat application, and sealing works.
“Once the Tandai Highway project is completed, full attention will shift to the Mendana Avenue Road rehabilitation, covering the remaining 1.7 kilometres up to the Honiara City Council Roundabout.”
These ongoing road upgrade projects are a welcome relief for members of West Honiara communities, West Guadalcanal, and local businesses alike.
“We sincerely appreciate road users for adhering to traffic controllers on-site, who assist in ensuring smooth traffic flow and safety.”
