The power of education to transform lives was the central message delivered during the Gizo Community High School (Gizo CHS) Year 12 and 13 graduation ceremony in Western Province last week.
The annual event was held under the theme; ‘Shaping Lives Through Education.’
For several years Gizo CHS did not stage any school graduation for Year 12 and Year 13.
This year was held at the Gizo Primary School Hall.
School Principal Richard Hiva challenged the graduating students to see their education as a vital tool for navigating an increasingly complex world, stressing that learning is not merely about passing exams or memorizing facts.
“By educating our children, we empower them with tools that shape their values and beliefs, preparing them to become ethical, responsible citizens who contribute positively to society,” Mr. Hiva said.
He outlined the wider impact of education across key areas of national life — describing it as the cornerstone of opportunity, personal development, civic responsibility, and critical thinking.
Education, he added; “opens doors to better job prospects, builds self-confidence, enhances communication, and develops problem-solving skills — all essential for progress in today’s changing world.”

The principal also took time to acknowledge the many “essential people” who keep the education system and communities functioning, describing them as the true backbone of society.
He paid tribute to teachers, healthcare workers, transport providers, police officers, and community caretakers, noting their often-unnoticed but crucial contributions.
Mr. Hiva then posed a challenge to the graduating students:
“What will be your essential service to your community? What really matters to you, and how will you use what matters most in service to others?” he questioned.
“Never forget where you come from — your people, your high school, your teachers,” he told the graduate class.
“You are special among thousands who do not share this opportunity. Western Province needs you, your family needs you, your community needs you — and above all, put God first in everything you do,” he stressed.
The event was attended by staff, guest Western Province Speaker Hon. Ramraka Talsasa, parents, community leaders, and education stakeholders who joined in celebrating the achievements of the 2025 graduating class.
The graduation ceremony ended with feasting and entertainment.
The ceremony was held at of their external exams which get underway this week.
