In a region where traditional sports often dominate, Brian Koveke has introduced Taekwondo martial art to the youths in Choiseul Province, promoting not only physical fitness but also discipline and self-confidence.
Driven by his passion for sports, Koveke established the “Island Elite Taekwondo” institution in Taro and Supizae last year.
He believes Taekwondo offers more than just self-defence skills, it is a tool for building character.
Since establishment, it has gained significant popularity among young athletes, including children, youths, and civil servants in the district.
Koveke highlighted that his Taekwondo institution aims to develop and motivate young athletes to experience different sporting activities.
“For a start, we are currently working on our martial art constitution to affiliate with the Solomon Islands Taekwondo Federation (SITF),” he said.
He emphasized that access to good and quality sports facilities remains a challenge.
However, he looks forward to his team’s participation in the coming Solomon Games next year.
For Koveke, this is just the beginning. His goal is to grow the sport, train full-time instructors, and put Choiseul Province on the map for martial arts excellence in the country.
In this interview, Koveke shares what led to the start of his martial art institution, the challenges, and his future expectations for Taekwondo in Choiseul Province.
