The Malaita Provincial Government has formally expressed its profound gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for a generous $380,000.00 donation supporting the Ward Sustainable Development Program.

Speaking on behalf of the provincial government and the people of Malaita, the Premier conveyed deep appreciation, describing the donation as a timely and strategic investment that will uplift livelihoods and deliver essential services across ward communities.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening also stated the ceremony marks not only the handover of $380,000.00 in development support—it marks a continuing story of cooperation, trust, and shared commitment to uplifting the lives of ordinary people across Malaita Province.

Implementation will involve Ward Development Committees, supported by the provincial Procurement, Planning, and Finance Divisions, along with respective Provincial Assembly Members. A Monitoring & Evaluation team will ensure transparency, accountability, and measurable impact.
“This support enables us to strengthen ward-level capacities, improve livelihood opportunities, and ensure development reaches those who need it to address their felt needs,” the Premier said.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening, Dr. Derek Futaiasi, also embraced the cordial bilateral friendship established between the Solomon Islands Government, extended at a sub-national level. And has contributed to support the ward small scale development programs. That will directly improve the livelihood and well-being of the rural communities.
A Strengthening Partnership
The Premier highlighted the growing cooperation between the Malaita Provincial Government and the People’s Republic of China, supported by close coordination with the Solomon Islands’ national government—including the Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other agencies.
Permanent Secretary Dr Derek Futaiasi reiterated the ceremony is not an isolated event—it is part of a broader and growing partnership between the People’s Republic of China, the National Government of Solomon Islands, and our provincial governments.
As Premier Asilaua stated, a major milestone in this collaboration was the 19 June 2025 Signing Ceremony in Nanjing, which formalized the sister-province relationship between Malaita Province and Jiangsu Province. This partnership has since resulted in multiple waves of support to Malaita communities.
Practical Contributions Transforming Communities
The Malaita Provincial Government acknowledged the substantial development assistance provided by Jiangsu Province, including:
- Agricultural machinery such as tractors, water and sewage pumps, and modern farming tools
- 100 solar streetlights, household solar systems, and solar flashlights
- Mobile garbage bins for improved waste management
- Two pickup vehicles enabling government officers to reach remote communities
- Over 100 sets of PPE and protective gear for frontline workers
- 20,000 sets of clothes and shoes for casual and sports wear
These contributions, valued at more than two million dollars, are already improving productivity, public safety, energy access, sanitation, and service delivery across the province.
Investing in Malaita’s Future Through Education
The Premier further recognized the significant educational opportunities offered through the sister-province partnership. Scholarships provided to Malaitan students in vital fields—engineering, agriculture, business, medicine, fisheries, public health, and education—represent a long-term investment in the province’s human capital.
“These opportunities are shaping the next generation of leaders and skilled professionals who will return to serve Malaita with knowledge and vision,” the Premier stated.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the China Medical Team and the China Police Liaison Team, whose work from 2024 to 2025 strengthened health services and public safety.
Strategic Projects Supporting Provincial Growth
Among the key initiatives underway is to begin with the 21-hectare Gwaigeo Rice Development Project. Identified as a high-potential venture through economies of scale. It will expand to potential farming locations in Malaita to increase production for the import substitution of the nation’s annual $400 million rice import market, and significantly enhance local food security.
The Premier also highlighted ongoing training programs, leadership exchanges, and capacity-building efforts in China, which continue to strengthen provincial governance and broaden development perspectives.
Additionally, the Auki Tar Sealing Project, supported through cooperation with the National Government and China, is progressing steadily and contributing to improved connectivity, trade, and community access.
A Shared Vision of Prosperity and Progress
The Malaita Provincial Government emphasized that these initiatives reflect a partnership built on mutual respect, shared prosperity, and a collective vision for sustainable development.
“Our friendship continues to strengthen our capacity, deepen collaboration, and create opportunities that benefit all Malaitans,” the Premier said.
In response, Charge d’Affaires Mr. Yang Jie stated the donation is important to support the well-being of the people. While working alongside the Solomon Islands Government and the Malaita Provincial Government to bring tangible benefits to the rural communities.
Charge d’Affairs Mr. Yang Jie further stated that China values this partnership deeply. “Our cooperation is founded on respect, mutual benefit, and a shared aspiration for development that is inclusive, sustainable, and community-driven.” He reiterated that the support provided is not a one-time gesture. It is part of a wider vision of working hand-in-hand with Solomon Islands Government and Malaita as it strengthens local governance, improves essential services, and empowers families and communities.
It is encouraged to note, as highlighted by Charge d’Affairs Mr. Yang Jie, that current tariff assistance opens doors to a vast market. China’s market is one of the largest in the world, with more than 1.4 billion consumers. Through the zero-tariff access framework for Least Developed Countries, Solomon Islands can economically benefit from preferential access to this huge market.
This means that many Solomon Islands products can enter China with zero customs duties, making them: more competitive, more affordable for buyers, and more attractive to importers and wholesalers in China.
For Malaita Province, this represents an enormous opportunity. Your products—whether in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, or handicrafts—have the potential to tap into a market that values quality, authenticity, and natural goods.
Tariff cooperation is not only about international trade—it touches the daily lives of rural households. Malaita farmers producing cassava, taro, cocoa, and coconut products can benefit directly from preferential tariffs, making exports more competitive.
This is similar for Fish, seaweed, beche-de-mer, and marine products—once processed to meet quality standards—can enter China at favourable tariff rates, boosting income opportunities for coastal communities.
Charge d’Affairs Yang Jie hands over $380,000.00 to Premier Elijah Asilaua to support Ward Development Grant for the well-being and livelihood of the rural ward communities under the Ward Sustainable Development Program.
