More than one thousand Roman Catholic worshippers from across the Shortland Islands far western border line, Choiseul Province, and Bougainville gathered at Gaomae, Shortland Islands, on Saturday to witness the ordination of Rev. Mathew Lamana, OP.
The significant religious event drew strong support from neighbouring regions, including over 200 parishioners from the Piano Parish in Bougainville, who travelled to Gaomae to attend the historic occasion.
The ordination ceremony was officiated by Most Rev. Bishop Peter Houhou, who consecrated Rev. Lamana during the service held on Saturday, December 20.
According to a report by Patere Jacob Qetobachu, the celebration began with a traditional canoe procession in which Rev. Lamana arrived together with his parents.
The procession was warmly welcomed by members of the Gaomae Catholic Community.
Following the welcome, Rev. Lamana was symbolically entrusted to his family and relatives from the Piano Parish, who continued the procession to the church.
The gesture marked respect for his new role as a priest, traditionally regarded as a “new chief” within the community.
Friends, relatives, and parishioners from various provinces have since extended their congratulations to the newly ordained priest.
Members of his immediate family described Rev. Mathew Lamana as a great blessing, not only to their family but also to the people of the Shortland Islands and the wider Catholic community.
The program ended with feasting, worship and dancing entertainments.
