A group of young youths were arrested by Honiara Police officers following the circulation of a viral video on Facebook that raised public concern over youth violence and disorderly behaviour in the capital.
The video, which was widely shared on social media this month showed a group of youths using offensive language and identifying themselves with street-based group names such as “East Coast,” “West Coast,” and other labels commonly associated with rival youth groups in Honiara.
According to police reports, the youths were later located and arrested in one of the public spots in Point Cruz after members of the public alerted authorities to their movements.
The footage sparked strong reactions online, with many residents expressing concern about the growing trend of youth gangs and the influence of social media in promoting violent , using of explicit bad languages, and anti-social behaviour.
Police confirmed that the youths were allegedly involved in group confrontations, with reports suggesting they had formed rival crews and were engaging in fights, pick pockets and other unlawful activities to demonstrate dominance and strength over one another.
It was further reported that the group had earlier gathered near the Ports area during a public program event on Tuesday, where their behaviour caused alarm among attendees. Members of the public reportedly contacted police, leading to swift action and the subsequent arrests.
Honiara Police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and warned youths against engaging in violent acts or using social media platforms to incite unrest.
Authorities are also calling on parents, guardians, and community leaders to take an active role in guiding young people and addressing the root causes of youth violence and other unlawful activities
