POLICE in Auki have increased their operations as part of ongoing efforts to reduce crime and ensure public safety in Malaita Province, especially during the Christmas and New year period.
In recent weeks, police conducted raids on several locations involved in the illegal sale of alcohol and the brewing of kwaso, a locally made homebrew.
During the operations, officers confiscated and removed equipment used for brewing the illegal liquor.
One of the major kwaso brewing sites, located at the Tiki area near Aligegeo School, was also raided by police fortnight ago.
Police said the operation forms part of a wider plan to eliminate illegal activities that pose risks to communities.
Sergeant Robert Alegao said police are committed to seeing communities free from crime.
He encouraged community leaders and members of the public to work closely with police by reporting any criminal activities that may threaten safety, particularly during the festive season.
Since last week, police have also been conducting traffic checks on all vehicles entering and moving around Auki.
In addition, officers are patrolling the streets daily and have set up a police booth in the centre of Auki town to strengthen visibility and response.
He said these measures are aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring a safe and peaceful Christmas for everyone in Auki and surrounding communities.
