Solomon Islands National University (SINU) will establish a Centre for Distance and Flexible Learning (DFL) in South Guadalcanal.
This is set to offer a landmark education initiative that promises to transform opportunities for young people and adults alike.
Rollen Seleso, Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, announced this during the Motion of Sine Die last month.
MP Seleso described the programme as a “valuable second chance” for school dropouts and those unable to pursue further studies due to financial hardship, distance or other life circumstances.
“Education is the foundation of sustainable development and long-term empowerment,” he said. “Investing in our people, our greatest resource, remains the most effective pathway to improving livelihoods and strengthening local capacity.”
The partnership between SINU and South Guadalcanal was formally established in March 2025, with construction of facilities already underway.
The centre is expected to launch in March this year, with classes commencing immediately after.
More than 150 applicants have already submitted forms, and numbers are expected to rise significantly before the opening.
MP Seleso praised the university’s “visionary initiative” and said the collaboration marked an important milestone in expanding access to quality education.
He emphasised that the programme would not only benefit individuals but also strengthen the constituency’s contribution to the national economy.
He also acknowledged the support of hosting communities, who have welcomed the project with enthusiasm.
He urged landowners and residents to continue being “good stewards” of development initiatives that serve both present and future generations.
“ Education is not a privilege for the few, but a right that must be extended to all, especially those who have been left behind,” he said.
Staff from DFL in Honiara traveled to the region late last year to do a promotion and awareness programs at schools and communities.
The rural communities welcome the initiative.
Its understood with the availability Our Telekom Towers and the provision of Star Link students can undergo their studies right from their communities.
