Member of Parliament (MP) for West New Georgia–Vona Vona Constituency in Western Province has urged for steady policy direction and prudent economic management as the Solomon Islands faces structural challenges, limited fiscal space and exposure to global shocks.
Speaking during December’s Motion of Sine-Die Hon George Temahua said, managing a small economy in a volatile global environment was “never straightforward” and required patience and cooperation across government and society.
“While there are signs of economic activity and recovery, the broader picture reminds us that resilience takes time to build,” Temahua told Parliament. “Structural challenges, limited fiscal space and exposure to external shocks continue to shape economic outcomes.
“This underscores the importance of steady policy direction, prudent decision-making and collaboration across government, parliament and society as we work towards a more resilient and inclusive economy.”
He singled out the Labour Mobility Scheme as a bright spot, saying it had provided valuable opportunities for households and contributed to national income.
“This programme has supported many families and communities, and we acknowledge the cooperation of our development partners who continue to support these initiatives,” he said.
At the same time, he stressed that long-term prosperity depended on strengthening opportunities at home.
“Continued effort to develop agriculture, fisheries, tourism and other productive sectors will be essential, particularly for our young people,” he said. “Shared natural resources also offer important opportunities for development, but we must ensure that legal, technical and institutional frameworks are strong enough to support responsible resource management and national benefit.”
