There is a need for stronger transparency, accountability and institutional reform to reinforce public trust in the Solomon Islands’ governance system.
Speaking during December’s Motion of Sine-Die, Member of Parliament (MP) for West New Georgia–Vona Vona Constituency Hon George Temahua, said that strong institutions were “the foundation of public trust” and urged lawmakers to ensure that reforms translate into tangible outcomes for citizens.
“Continued effort to strengthen transparency, accountability and coordination across government will reinforce confidence in our national system,” he told Parliament.
“The scale of development activity supported by our partners highlights the importance of alignment with national priorities and effective parliamentary oversight. The government’s stated commitment to integrity and good governance is welcome, but sustained support for oversight institutions will be important in ensuring these principles are reflected in practice.”
He stressed that progressing fundamental legislation would help strengthen coherence across public administration and support long-term development planning.
“Advancing key institutions, planning frameworks and regulatory reforms will support responsible development and best service delivery,” he said. “Strengthening systems that ensure public resources reach their intended purpose will continue to improve outcomes for our people.”
He also urged Parliament to support ongoing reforms in infrastructure regulation and governance to ensure affordability, reliability and inclusiveness. “By working together, Parliament can help provide a stable and supportive framework for national progress,” Temahua said.
The MP’s remarks reflect growing concern about the need to bolster institutional capacity as the country faces economic pressures, climate challenges and rising social demands.
