The Continuing Vocational Education and Training (CVET) Program offered by the University of the South Pacific (USP) Solomon Islands Campus allows for practical training that can open doors for school leavers and mature workers.
Speaking during the USP’s organised talk-back show on Sunday Ruby Auma said CVET is designed to provide skills‑based learning rather than purely academic study.
“These are qualifications that prepare you for work. They teach you the skills you need, not just academic theory,” she told listeners.
She explained that CVET programmes span four disciplines: arts and humanities, business and commerce, science and technology, and hospitality and tourism.
Courses range from early childhood education and counselling to cyber security, disaster risk management and commercial cookery.
“We are not just offering certificates. CVET allows students to move from short courses to diplomas and eventually degrees, building skills step by step,” she said.
Entry requirements are flexible, with pathways for both school leavers and mature entrants. “There are no boundaries,” she said.
“If you come from the province, we offer short courses for two to three days, or we schedule cohorts where there is demand.”
She emphasised that CVET is about widening access and supporting Pacific communities. “Our focus is on practical skills. We want graduates to be job‑ready and able to contribute immediately to their communities,” she added.
By placing CVET at the centre of the talkback show, USP underscored its commitment to workforce development.
The programmes are positioned as vital bridges between education and employment, equipping Pacific learners with skills that respond directly to labour market needs, she said.
