SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed Anthony Gill as the first Country Director of its new Solomon Islands Resident Mission in Honiara.
Mr. Gill, who assumes office on Wednesday, will lead ADB’s operations in Solomon Islands.
He will also oversee the implementation of the forthcoming Pacific Approach 2026–2030, which will serve as ADB’s overall country partnership strategy for Solomon Islands.
“I am excited to build on ADB’s 52-year strong partnership with Solomon Islands,” said Mr. Gill.
“The new resident mission will enable ADB to better assist Solomon Islands in achieving their development goals by improving connectivity through constructing quality infrastructure, strengthening human capital, and promoting private sector development.”
Solomon Islands has been working with ADB since 1973. To date, ADB has committed 49 sovereign projects and 134 technical assistance (TA) projects totaling $644 million to Solomon Islands.
ADB’s current sovereign portfolio in Solomon Islands includes 10 loans and 20 grants worth $362.3 million.
ADB-supported projects in Solomon Islands focus on building quality infrastructure in the transport sector, particularly roads, and on upgrading the international port in Honiara and provincial wharves. It also facilitates investments to support health, renewable energy, urban water supply and sanitation, solid waste management, and economic reforms through policy-based operations.
An Australian national, Mr. Gill has 30 years of experience as a development professional in both multilateral and bilateral development organizations. During his 18 years at ADB, he has held several leadership roles, including extensive experience working in Cambodia. He was a member of the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation Program Secretariat, head of both Portfolio Administration and Country Programming for ADB’s Indonesia Resident Mission, and country economist for several North Pacific countries. Before joining ADB, Mr. Gill held senior roles with the Government of Australia.
