Prime Minister (PM) Jeremiah Manele has praised expanding ties with China.
This was during the Chinese Lunar New Year reception held on Thursday in Honiara.
He cited Beijing-backed projects in health, trade and infrastructure as the Pacific nation prepares to graduate from least developed country status.
“Let the Year of the Horse bring new beginnings to all of us. And may it inspire all people to embrace strength, nurture connections and persevere in the New Year,” Manele told guests including former prime ministers, diplomats and Chinese community representatives.
Reflecting on six years of diplomatic relations, Manele said the partnership had delivered “milestone developments” across health, education, rural development and communications.

He highlighted the China-Aid Comprehensive Medical Centre, equipped with advanced technology including the country’s only digital subtraction angiography machine, as boosting local health services.
He also noted 141 communications towers built nation-wide, more than 70 of which are connected to the national system.
“Improved connectivity is critical for a geographically dispersed nation,” he said.
China’s removal of tariffs on Solomon Islands products has supported local producers, Manele said, adding that talks are underway on a free trade agreement.

“Our recognition of the One China Principle is a step towards realizing the goal of advanced infrastructural development and rural, social and economic advancement,” he said.
The prime minister also thanked Beijing for logistical support during last year’s Pacific Islands Forum leaders’ meeting.
He described the partnership as based on “equality, respect and mutual benefit.”
Chinese Ambassador Cai Weiming expressed gratitude for Solomon Islands’ friendship.
“As we welcome the Year of the Horse, I extend my sincere thanks to all our friends in Solomon Islands for walking alongside us on this journey of cooperation and mutual respect.
“May this new year bring prosperity, harmony, and greater success to our shared endeavours,” he said.
