Despite their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 Women’s FIFA World Cup coming to an end following a heavy 8–0 loss to New Zealand’s Football Ferns on Monday night, Solomon Islands Women’s National Team captain Ileen Pegi says she remains proud of her side’s effort.
Back-to-back defeats to American Samoa and the Football Ferns have confirmed the hosts’ early exit from the competition, despite still having one Group A match left to play.
“There’s a lot to take in from this game, but I am super proud of the girls for the teamwork, the fighting spirit and never giving up until full-time,” Pegi said after the match against New Zealand.
The skipper also praised the younger members of the squad for rising to the occasion on one of the biggest stages in regional women’s football.

“We have many young players and this is more of a development side for us. I’m really happy and proud of the younger ones for stepping up. We’ll definitely regroup and prepare for our final group match,” she added.
Head Coach Daniel Barrett also expressed his gratitude to the families and local supporters who turned out in strong numbers to back the team.
“I hope you’re proud of your team. These girls love playing for their country and in front of their fans. They don’t get to do it all the time, so I truly hope you’re proud of them tonight [Monday],” he said.
Barrett acknowledged that while the team did not achieve the results they were hoping for, their courage and determination were evident throughout the campaign.
Solomon Islands will now play for pride when they face Samoa women’s national football team this Thursday, with both sides already eliminated after two consecutive defeats.
