The Kolofe 1 and 2 bridges in Malaita Province are now open to the public.
Government through Ministry’s Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD) and project partners announced this on Tuesday.
These two bridges along the Lau Mbaelelea Road stretch in Malaita Province faced challenges during construction, but TIMSD is glad to see them now used by vehicles and pedestrians since last month.
These road structures will improve travel, ensure safety, and are designed to be climate-resilient.
It helps facilitate the movement of people and goods, supporting the flow of services to Fouia, the Lau Lagoon areas, and as far as Baegu.

TIMSD is also relieved to hear about the recent apprehension of the prime suspect involved in the attack on a foreign worker from China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, who was undertaking the construction.
“We thank the Auki and Malu’u police team, community leaders and members for their support, which led to his arrest, and for their unwavering support throughout the construction phases,” a TIMSD statement said.

Also, the Su’u and Bira bridges along the South Road have been completed. These projects were funded by the World Bank under the Solomon Islands Road and Aviation Project II (SIRAP 2) component 2 on Climate Resilience and Safety Investments.
An official opening for all four bridges is being planned for some time this month.
“These bridges are a major investment by the government.
“We kindly ask the community members to value and look after them. Avoid vandalism of any kind and take pride in these assets, as they are the arteries that connect our lives, families, and aspirations.”
