Women and girls in the Valapata community, Vella La Vella, Western Province are taking bold steps in community development by leading the construction of a new Youth Hub Center, demonstrating the growing role of women in leadership and decision-making.
The SPC PPAC Phase 7 funded project has brought together mothers, young women, and girls who are actively involved in planning, coordination, fundraising, and mobilizing community support.
Their leadership has challenged traditional perceptions and highlighted the important contributions of women to local development initiatives.
Mr. Jesse Lelokana emphasized that the initiative has empowered women and girls to take a leadership role in implementing activities, including mobilizing community members to move the project forward.

He noted that their active involvement has strengthened unity and cooperation within the community.
“This project is not only about building a center,” Mr. Lelokana shared. “It is about building confidence, leadership, and opportunities for our young people, especially our girls.”
Adding to this, Mrs. Andelin Lelokana highlighted that women and girls have also taken responsibility for managing key logistical tasks, including coordinating the milling of timbers and organizing the transportation of materials to the project site.
She noted that their active involvement in these practical aspects of construction demonstrates their capability, commitment, and determination to see the project succeed.

The Youth Hub Center is expected to serve as a safe, inclusive space for youth programs, leadership training, church activities, and skills-development initiatives.
It aims to promote positive engagement and create opportunities for young people to contribute meaningfully to their community.
Mr. Lelokana expressed hope that the project will be officially launched by the end of March 2026, marking a significant milestone for the community.
The initiative stands as a strong example of how empowering women and girls can drive sustainable development and strengthen the social fabric of communities across the Solomon Islands.
