Hookin4Health Solomon Islands, in partnership with the Solomon Islands Hockey Federation (SIHF), on Sunday marked International Women’s Day (IWD) with a small event at the National Hockey Centre in Honiara.
Speaking to Star Sports, facilitator Esmie Belo said the event aimed to bring girls and women together through sport while also promoting awareness and discussions on women’s empowerment.
“We came together today to celebrate International Women’s Day. Through sport, we want to bring women together and remind them of their importance in society, especially in sports,” she said.
She added that some of the participants were mothers whose children are part of the federation’s development programs.

“Today’s participants also included mothers whose children have joined our development programs, and we were very happy with the turnout,” Belo said.
Held under the theme “Give to Gain,” the event featured activity sessions for girls and women, awareness programs, and open discussions linked to the theme.
“We believe this theme is very meaningful for women. It reminds us that it is important to invest more in women, especially in sports,” she added.
Celebrated annually on March 8, International Women’s Day recognizes the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and also serves as a call for gender equality.
For 2026, the United Nations has designated the theme: “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls.”
