Honiara’s Tandai Highway – Rifle Range Roundabout Works Progressing
Works on the Tandai Highway in West Honiara continue to progress well and, over the past week, the T-intersection at St Johns and the roundabout intersection at Rove have been substantially completed allowing both carriageways of the new road to be opened to traffic through the Rove area,
Construction work is now focused on the remaining roundabout intersection at Rifle-Range where work has commenced, marking another important step toward improving traffic flow and road safety in West Honiara. The works are currently taking place on the seaside section of the roundabout.
Initial construction activities include sub-base and sub-grade preparation, back-filling, and compacting works to stabilise the foundation of the roundabout structure. Once these preparatory works are completed, concrete works will follow to form the structural components of the roundabout.
After the seaside section is completed, construction activities will shift to the landside to continue the development of the roundabout.
To minimise disruptions and ensure the protection of essential services in the area, the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), has installed warning and traffic management signs around the construction site to guide motorists and pedestrians safely through the area.

Commenting on the progress of the works, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), Mr Allan Lilia, emphasised the importance of the project:
“The Tandai-Rifle Ridge Roundabout is a critical traffic node in West Honiara. Upgrading this intersection, together with associated road improvements, will enhance road safety, improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and deliver long-term benefits for road users and the city.”
Members of the public, including drivers and pedestrians, are kindly advised to exercise caution when passing through the construction zone. Road users are encouraged to follow all traffic signs, observe traffic management instructions, and remain mindful of construction workers operating within the area.
Due to limited opportunities for alternative routes around the site, some level of traffic congestion may be unavoidable during the construction period. However, traffic management measures will be in place to minimise disruptions and ensure the safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians as far as practicable.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development appreciates the continued patience and understanding of the public while these important road improvements are being carried out.
The project is being implemented under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), jointly funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Solomon Islands Government (SIG).
