RSIPF warns residents to avoid the Alligator Creek area on 18 March during a controlled UXO demolition at Hells Point as part of ongoing efforts to remove explosive remnants of World War II.
The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has advised the public that a controlled demolition of unexploded ordnance (UXO) will take place at Hells Point in the Alligator Creek area on 18 March 2026.
Director of Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Clifford Tunuki, said the Hells Point Demolition Range in Central Guadalcanal will be active from 8:00am to 2:00pm on the scheduled date.
Inspector Tunuki said farmers, fishermen, hunters and members of the public in and around the Henderson area, Alligator Creek and Tenaru School are advised to stay clear of the Hells Point demolition range while the operation is underway.
“To ensure public safety, controlled evacuations and roadblocks will be enforced in designated areas from East Henderson to the Tenaru School bus stop during the operation,” he said.
Inspector Tunuki explained that the activity forms part of the RSIPF Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department’s weekly operational program to safely dispose of unexploded ordnance and reduce the quantity of explosive materials currently stored at the site.
He added that the Honiara International Airport Air Traffic Control Tower will coordinate the firing of each demolition serial, with EOD operators stationed at the control tower throughout the operation to ensure safe coordination.
The RSIPF thanked the public for their cooperation and understanding as EOD officers continue their work to safely remove and dispose of explosive remnants of war, helping to keep communities across Guadalcanal and Honiara safe.
