Dear Editor – Our world is in a pretty bad state, largely, it must be said, due to the ego driven and inept leadership of one man, Donald Trump.
Now is therefore not the best time for our politicians to be indulging themselves once again in the numbers game. Now is surely a time for political stability.
The Prime Minister, whether the current one or somebody else, and the Cabinet are going to be faced with a difficult and unpredictable situation caused by the war In Iran and the result that is having on fuel supplies and world trade. We may be far away geographically but we will feel the effects here.
Our politicians should, I suggest, be concentrating on the economy of this country and the well-being of its citizens and not on power grabs.
If the PM doesn’t have the numbers for a majority Government he should either resign so that a new PM can be elected, or he should advise the Governor General to convene Parliament immediately so that the motion of no confidence can be debated.
Photos on the front pages of the newspapers showing a happy band of 28 MPs may not be proof positive that the PM doesn’t have the numbers but it is certainly an indication that all is not well.
The PM surely can’t have it both ways. He says that the only way a PM can be voted out of office is on the floor of Parliament.
That being so, is he not obliged to do what is required to enable Parliament to meet so that any questions can be answered and the Government of the day can then concentrate on the issues that really matter?
