Road rehabilitation works along Mendana Avenue in Honiara are progressing steadily, with key upgrades underway to improve one of the city’s busiest transport corridors.
The project covers the stretch from Heritage Park Roundabout to the Solomon Islands Ports Authority junction at Point Cruz.
Current works, initially focused on the seaside carriageway, include drainage upgrades, installation of roadside kerbing, and pavement preparation ahead of final asphalt surfacing. These improvements are aimed at ensuring the road meets required engineering standards and can withstand increasing traffic demands.
However, the contractor has encountered challenges, including unexpected conflicts with existing utility services such as power and telecommunications infrastructure. These issues require close coordination with relevant service providers and, along with unfavourable weather conditions, have affected the pace of work.
The contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, remains committed to completing the seaside carriageway before moving on to the landside section along the same stretch. Works will then progress in stages through the central business district, ending at the MID/HCC roundabout.
Authorities acknowledge that sections of the current road—particularly around the Central Market area—are prone to deterioration during wet weather. Temporary repairs will be carried out in the most affected areas while work continues toward a permanent upgrade.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Allan Lilia, said the project is delivering important improvements.
“We are pleased with the steady progress made along this key stretch of road. These upgrades are necessary to ensure safety and durability. Once completed, the road will significantly improve traffic flow, road safety, and overall driving conditions for all users,” Mr Lilia said.
Due to space constraints, traffic disruption and congestion remain unavoidable during construction, particularly during periods of bad weather. Authorities have acknowledged and appreciated the patience of road users, pedestrians, and the business community.
Members of the public are advised to exercise caution when travelling through work zones. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to follow traffic signage, observe speed limits, and cooperate with traffic controllers to ensure safety.
The upgrade works are being carried out under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), a partnership between the Asian Development Bank and the Solomon Islands Government.
