A police officer is under investigation after a marked vehicle crashed into a tree at Gracious Bay, Temotu Province.
A police officer is under investigation following a road accident involving a police-marked vehicle at Gracious Bay in Temotu Province early this morning, 21 March 2026.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander for Temotu, Inspector Walter Leleina, confirmed that an officer allegedly involved in the incident is now subject to initial police investigations.
Inspector Leleina said preliminary inquiries into the accident have already been carried out, and once the report is finalized, it will be referred to the Professional Standards Internal Investigation (PSII) Department for further action.
“At this stage, it is too early to determine the possible cause of the accident. We will wait for investigators to establish the facts,” he said.
The police-marked vehicle reportedly veered off the road and struck a tree along the roadside at Gracious Bay.
Inspector Leleina has called on residents in the area to remain patient as investigations continue.
“Villagers at Gracious Bay are urged to remain patient as investigators gather all relevant information to determine the cause of the accident,” he added.
He further clarified that any decision regarding the suspension of the officer, including the possibility of half pay, will depend on recommendations from the PSII Department and will ultimately be determined by the Commissioner of Police.
The provincial police chief emphasized that the investigation will take time to ensure a thorough and fair process.
He also appealed to members of the public who may have information about the incident to come forward and assist police with their inquiries.
