A teacher suspected of breaking into the Auki BSP Branch was arrested on Monday, sparking concern over public safety and disrupting banking services at the Malaita Provincial capital.
Reports indicated the man, allegedly intoxicated, forced open the bank’s entrance door while taking advantage of the absence of security personnel.
Police were alerted and responded quickly, positioning themselves outside as the suspect moved inside the premises.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander for Malaita Province, Michael Ramosae, confirmed the arrest.
“Police responded to the incident and observed the suspect inside the bank. He was arrested as he made his way to the entrance,” Ramosae said.
Fortunately, no money was stolen, although damage was reported to the bank’s entrance door.
The suspect remains in police custody.
The incident has forced the bank to close indefinitely, leaving many businesses and individuals unable to access essential banking services as of Monday.
BSP Financial Group on Monday morning announced an indefinite closure of the branch.
Local residents and business owners have expressed frustration, noting that the disruption has caused delays in financial transactions, payments, and other routine banking needs.
It remains unclear when the bank will resume normal operations, leaving the community awaiting updates from authorities.
