The Member of Parliament (MP) for South Choiseul Constituency (SCC), Hon. Tozen Leokana, has called on all residents of his constituency to prioritise safety as tropical cyclone Maila continues to intensify, with warnings indicating it could reach category 4 strength.
In a statement issued by the SCC office, Leokana expressed deep concern over reports and images emerging from coastal communities already affected by strong winds, coastal flooding, and powerful waves.
He said his office is closely monitoring the situation through social media updates and direct communication with communities via video calls.
“My heart is with every family facing fear, damage, strong waves, and uncertainty. Please know that you are not alone. We are standing with you in thought, in prayer, and in our commitment to respond.”
MP Leokana urged all residents to take the situation seriously and strictly follow safety measures as conditions are expected to worsen.
He advised families to keep children away from dangerous coastal areas, evacuate to higher ground where homes are under threat, and avoid travelling by boat in rough sea conditions.
He also called on ward and community leaders to take the lead in activating disaster evacuation plans and ensuring all members of their communities are accounted for at all times.
Leokana emphasized the importance of unity during the crisis, encouraging people to support one another and priorities the protection of life above all else.
“Let us do everything we can to keep our people safe and keep mortality at zero,” he said, while also calling for continued prayers during the difficult period.
The Minister of Education further assured that the SCC office will conduct a proper assessment once the cyclone has passed to determine the extent of damage and the needs of affected communities.
He stressed that safety must remain the immediate priority.
“Protect life first. Property can be assessed later, but lives cannot be replaced,” he added.
