Dear Editor – How long will we continue to ignore the issue of corruption in our country? Is it because we have normalized it? Or are we just choosing to ignore it?
Corruption is now tolerated as a normal part of life, to the point where people don’t realise it anymore.
My concern is, are we going to allow our future generations to inherit a system that is shaped into being silenced by corruption?
Or are we going to make the difference now, so that our future generations don’t have to face the same challenges that we have failed to address.
In our country, Solomon Islands, nepotism and cronyism are just two among the many forms of corruption that our country is currently facing on a daily basis, and our culture somehow plays a role in why we sometimes oversee this form of corruption and just see it as a way of helping our friends and families.
These practices of prioritizing family and friends over fairness and qualification will not only undermine the integrity of our country and its institutions, but also the growth and development of our country, and I know everyone in the Solomon Islands wants development and change, but we have got to start with changing our mentalities and how we turn a blind eye on the small but impactful forms of corruption.
