Taxi operators at the Western provincial capital of Gizo have agreed to increase their fares by an additional $5 across all routes.
The rising fuel cost has been attributed to the increase which had affected their operations.
The decision was reached during a meeting involving Lezu Taxi Fleet Service and taxi drivers in Gizo on Tuesday.
The meeting took place at the Busu Depot Fuel Station, where drivers agreed that the fare adjustment was necessary to cope with the rising cost and limited availability of fuel.
Lezu Taxi Fleet Service remains the primary provider of transport services for residents in Gizo, making the fare increase significant for daily commuters who rely heavily on taxis for travel.
Updated fare rates for key routes are as follows:
49 area – $30
Tisi – $35
Tisi Heights – $40
Malakerava 1 & 2 – $25
M3 – $25
Jah noii– $35
New Manda Heights – $45
Babylon – $30
Banana – $30
Banana Heights – $35
Drivers say the adjustment is a temporary measure but may remain in place depending on how long the fuel shortage persists.
Meanwhile, residents have expressed concern over the increased cost of transportation, especially for those who depend on taxis for work, school, and daily activities.
