ASIAN Development Bank (ADB) says Fiu River hydropower project in Malaita province is one of the projects they are considering for funding.
Speaking exclusively to the Solomon Star in Sydney this week Hayden Everett, a Senior Country Specialist of the Pacific Liaison and Coordination Office within ADB said Fiu hydro is on their list for funding this year.
The project comes under a provincial renewable energy project.
The other projects for Solomon Islands are sustainable transport infrastructure improvement program, domestic maritime support (sector) project and the broadband for development project.
Funding for these projects will be considered in April by the ADB board.
Both the ADB and Solomon Islands government are expected to support the proposed hydro project.
Under the project proposal, this new development is aimed at increasing economic activity in Auki, Malaita Province.
Currently Solomon Islands Electricity Authority (SIEA) is supplying power to Auki and its surrounding communities.
