The people of Anofiu Community in East Malaita, Malaita Province, can now walk safely to their homes following the official handover of a newly constructed 400-meter Jacob’s Ladder held last Thursday – 23rd October 2025.
The project marks a significant milestone for the community, providing safer and easier access for children, women, and the elderly who previously struggled to walk through the steep and slippery terrain.
The handover ceremony brought together community members, children, staff of World Vision Solomon Islands (WVSI), and invited guests from the Malaita Provincial Government (MPG) to celebrate the completion of this vital infrastructure project.
The 400-meter Jacob’s ladder project was made possible through a partnership between WVSI, World Vision Zealand (WVNZ), and the Anofiu community, with funding support from the New Zealand Government through the ‘Youth Social Entrepreneurship Development (YSED) + Child Protection (CP)’ Project.
During the event, Anofiu Community representative Samson Ata welcomed everyone, acknowledging the strong partnership that made the project possible.
“We thank World Vision, the New Zealand Government, the Malaita Provincial Government, and all who supported this project.
This ladder is more than a structure, it’s a pathway to safety and progress for our people,” he said.
For the youth of Anofiu, the new ladder brings a sense of relief and pride. Youth representative Cynthia Hanna stated that the project will transform their daily lives in the long run.
“This project will help youth and children walk freely without fear and accident. Before, children could have accidents or slide while walking up to their homes. That danger is now gone,” said Ms. Hanna.

Representing the Malaita Provincial Government and Guest of Honor at the ceremony, MPG’s Youth Desk Officer, Francis Samo, praised the collaboration between the youth, community, and WVSI.
“I want to recognize the community, the youth, and World Vision staff for making this project a reality. This is what partnership looks like,” he said.
“The Jacob’s Ladder will make a real difference in the daily lives of young people, helping them move safely without fear of slipping or falling. It’s a significant project with a big impact”.
He assured the community of the Malaita Provincial Government’s continued support for any future projects.
Speaking on behalf of WVSI, Richard Lee, ‘YSED + CP Project Coordinator’, acknowledged all the stakeholders who contributed to the project’s success.
“This achievement reflects the dedication of community members, WVSI project staff, the Malaita Provincial Government, and the generous support of the New Zealand Government. Together, we’ve created safer pathways for generations to come,” Mr. Lee stated.
Mr. Lee encouraged the community to continue working together in unity for the ongoing development and betterment of their community.
The ladder, which stretches across steep terrain, now connects key parts of the community that were once difficult and dangerous to access, especially for children and youth walking to and from school or church.
