THE country will join the globe to celebrate 2016 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) today.
In Honiara a walk to fight against corruption will be staged this morning.
The message for this year’s anti-corruption day (IACD) is that corruption impacts negatively on our future, our children’s future, our resources, our democracy and the development of Solomon Islands, its people and natural resources and urges everyone to unite and to take a stand against it.
This year’s theme is ‘Break the Corruption Chain’ which encapsulate the greater call for action and responsibility from the government, private sector and civil society to play an active role in breaking the chain the binds corruption to flourish in government institutions, private sectors and in the society as a whole.
The chairperson of the organising committee, Ruth Liloqula said that the program will commence at 8am this morning beginning with the ‘Walk Against Corruption.’
This will start from the Honiara City Council, parking space to the National Art Gallery where the main event of the IACD will be held.
Ms Liloqula said “corruption harms everyone in society. It robs the community of important goods and services. It creates distrust and political instability. Corruption is an obstacle to a country reaching its potential and offering a better future to all.
“This country cannot afford to allow the level of corruption, the misuse and abuse of entrusted power for personal gain rise to a disastrous epidemic level that leads a society into chaos than a prosperous one for all.”
