RESIDENTS of Auki town in Malaita province are voicing their frustration over the delayed removal of rubbish in the township, prompting criticism towards the provincial government.
Garbage bins at the Auki Central Market and along local streets have been overflowing for nearly a week, raising significant public health concerns.
Photos of the uncollected trash have circulated on social media, drawing attention to the issue.
This unsightly refuse is becoming a breeding ground for rats and other animals, posing serious health risks to the community.
Concerned residents are urging the Malaita Provincial Government and its newly formed Auki Green Healthy Setting Committee to expedite their clean-up efforts.
A recent visit to Auki town revealed that many street bins were overflowing, with rubbish strewn across various locations.
One local commentator questioned the provincial government’s management of waste, particularly in light of a garbage truck funded by the Japanese government in 2021.
“Waste management should not be a challenge given that Malaita province has two garbage trucks available to handle waste in Auki,” he stated
This paper understood that the Malaita Provincial Government has rented private land for years to dispose of daily waste in Auki, yet they continue to struggle with securing a proper dumpsite.
