EIGHT final year medical students from Bond University, Australia, are currently in the country for a six week clinical placement.
A statement from the Australian High Commission Office early this week said the students and their supervisor spent the first 10 days at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara before traveling to the Western Province.
“They are now travelling to Western Province to work and be based at Gizo Hospital and Helena Goldie Hospital for the next four weeks,” the statement said.
Over 250 medical students from Bond University have completed their clinical placement in the country since 2013, it was revealed.
“Bond University and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services – Solomon Islands have a long-standing partnership, supported by the Australia’s Government’s New Combo Plan,” the statement said.
It was highlighted that the students were all very impressed with the knowledge and practical skills of the local doctors and nurses, and look forward to continuing to learn in the provinces.
Australia said it is proud to work together to improve health services and health outcome for the people of Solomon Islands through the Solomon Islands – Australia Partnership for health.
“Clinical partnerships like this are one way Australia is helping to build a strong health workforce and a strong health system, and demonstrate how learning and exchange goes both ways,” the statement.
Apart from medical students from Australia coming over to Solomon Islands, local nurses and doctors at NRH are also traveling over to Australia on fellowship to do attachment at Australian University Medical Facilities.
