The people of Small Malaita have celebrated the completion of several community infrastructure projects, funded under the Solomon Islands – Australia Community Partnerships.
In Riverside Village, a solar-powered street lighting project was successfully completed, co-funded by the Australian Government and Hon Rick Houenipwela. The new lights are helping families move safely at night, enjoy evening gatherings, and access services after dark.
In Eliote Village, the Heruiesi Community Street Lighting Project was handed over, bringing brighter public spaces and safer movement for youth and families. In Ro’one Village, a similar street lighting project is now supporting evening activities and improving community safety.
The Tolosi Hokutenikeni Women’s Association also celebrated the completion of a water tank project, which was officially opened by Hon Rick Houenipwela, and is helping improve health, hygiene, and dignity for the community.
Australia’s Acting High Commissioner, Mr Andrew Schloeffel, said projects like these reflect Australia’s commitment to delivering locally led solutions that create local jobs and respond to the priorities of rural communities—especially where support is needed most.
“Australia is supporting communities in Small Malaita to deliver practical infrastructure that makes a real difference. These projects are locally led, community driven, and focused on what matters most to families.”
The Australian High Commission has opened a new round of the Solomon Islands – Australia Community Partnerships and is accepting applications until Sunday 31 August 2025. For more information, please go to https://solomonislands.embassy.gov.au/honi/communitypartnerships.html
