South Pacific Oil Limited (SPOL) Avaiki Rugby Club (RC) is the 2025 Honiara Rugby Union Association (HRUA) Men’s 15s Premier Champion.
The claimed the title after defeating arch-rivals Henderson Hammerhead Sharks 26-15 in a thrilling grand final on Thursday at Town Ground Rugby Stadium.
It was a repeat of last year’s decider, with the two heavyweights once again battling for supremacy in what was another dominant season for both sides.
The Hammerheads opened the scoring early, but Avaiki responded with class to take control of the contest, underlining why they remain the benchmark in Honiara rugby.
Speaking after the match, an emotional Avaiki captain Timo Sanga said, the victory carried mixed emotions, as the team dedicated the win to a fallen teammate.
“Our victory today is the result of weeks of hard preparation. But more importantly, we dedicate it to our brother, the late Danny Kabei. This is both a joyful and moment of grief for us,” Sanga said.
Reflecting on their successful title defense, the skipper praised his team’s commitment and sacrifice.
“Defending a title is never easy, but we put in a lot of time, effort, and resources to make this possible. It’s a proud moment to be back-to-back champions,” he added.
Sanga also paid tribute to the club’s loyal supporters.
“Without our supporters, we wouldn’t have made it this far. They’ve stood with us from day one, and this victory is for them as well,” he said.
Meanwhile, in Wednesday’s third-place playoff, Tavuli Giants RC staged a late comeback to edge Usotasi RC 17-15, securing a historic third place finish in the competition.
The final standings saw Avaiki crowned champions, Henderson Hammerhead Sharks as runners-up, Tavuli Giants in third, and Usotasi settling for the fourth position.
