THE GOVERNMENT’S multi-billion dollar housing scheme had come under public criticism.
Many members of the public have contacted Solomon Star by telephone voicing strong opposition and doubts about the credibility of the proposed scheme.
Last week the Parliamentary Opposition Leader Jeremiah Manele also strongly lashed out against the proposed scheme describing it as another fraudulent deal by the government purported to deceive the people of Solomon Islands.
Under the proposed scheme, Government plans to build about 1,000 residential homes to house public officers.
It involves acquisition of land to accommodate the homes, a project estimated to cost billions of dollars.
But the involvement of Special Secretary to the Prime Minister, Rence Sore had roused public criticism for his part as member of the Board of Directors of one the companies earmarked to carry out the proposed project.
The Solomon Star understand that following announcement of the proposed project by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, it had been the subject of immense public debate over the media and other communication outlets throughout the country.
Many of the criticisms described the proposed scheme as fraudulent and obsessed with intend to deceive the public of Solomon Islands.
Critics say while the end beneficiaries of the proposed project are acting as the good guys out to help public servants,another big question hangs over where the billions of dollars to meet the cost of the project is going to come from?
In an attempt to get response to criticisms leveled against the Government, the Office of the Prime Minister said it was putting out an official press statement on the issue.
